Setting Up Text Messaging
Quick version: Fieldkit lets you text customers from your business phone number. You need to complete a one-time registration so phone carriers know you are a real business. This takes about 3-7 business days.
Before You Start
You need call tracking set up first. SMS uses the same phone number as your call tracking. If you have not set up call tracking yet, see Phone & Call Tracking.
You will also need:
- Your legal business name (exactly as registered)
- Your EIN (Employer Identification Number) -- the 9-digit number from the IRS
- Your business address
- A contact email and phone number
Why Registration Is Required
Phone carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) require all businesses to register before sending text messages. This is called A2P 10DLC registration. It proves you are a real business and not a spammer.
Fieldkit walks you through the entire process. You fill out a form, and we handle the rest.
How to Register
- Go to Settings and scroll to the SMS & Automation section.
- Click Start Setup next to A2P Registration.
- Fill in your business information:
- Legal business name (must match your EIN records)
- EIN number (format: XX-XXXXXXX)
- Business type (LLC, Sole Proprietor, Corporation, etc.)
- Business address
- Contact email and phone
- Website (optional but recommended)
- Click Submit for Review.
- Wait for brand approval (1-3 business days).
- Once approved, click Create Messaging Service.
- Provide sample text messages showing how you will communicate with customers. Fieldkit pre-fills these for you, but you can customize them.
- Click Submit Campaign and wait for campaign approval (1-7 business days).
- Once everything is approved, click Enable SMS.
What Happens During Registration
The process has two review stages:
Brand Review (1-3 days): Verifies your business is real. They check your business name, EIN, and address against public records.
Campaign Review (1-7 days): Reviews the types of messages you plan to send. Fieldkit submits sample messages for missed call replies, appointment reminders, and estimate follow-ups.
While Registration Is Pending
You can keep using Fieldkit normally while waiting for approval. Call tracking, scheduling, estimates, and everything else works as usual. You just cannot send text messages until registration is complete.
You can check your registration status anytime by going to Settings and looking at the SMS section. Click Check Status to refresh.
If Registration Fails
This is rare, but it can happen if:
- Your business name does not match your EIN records
- Your EIN is incorrect
- Your business information cannot be verified
If registration fails, contact Fieldkit support. We will help you fix the issue and resubmit.
Tips
- Use your exact legal business name, not a "doing business as" name
- Double-check your EIN before submitting -- typos are the most common reason for rejection
- Having a website helps approval go faster, but it is not required
- Registration is one-time only. Once approved, you are all set
