How to Create a New Job

Quick version: Go to Jobs in the sidebar, click New Job, pick a customer, give it a title, set the date and time, and hit Create Job.

Step by Step

  1. Click Jobs in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the New Job button in the top-right corner.
  3. Pick a customer from the dropdown. This is required. If the customer isn't in your system yet, click + Create New Customer at the top of the dropdown to add them on the spot.
  4. Enter a job title. Something short that describes the work, like "Water heater replacement" or "Kitchen faucet leak." This is required.
  5. Pick a service (optional). If you've set up your service catalog, you can select a service from the dropdown. This auto-fills the job title and service type for you, and shows estimated hours and material costs.
  6. Set the service type (optional). If you didn't pick from the catalog, you can type in a custom service type like "Plumbing" or "Electrical."
  7. Add a description (optional). Use this for job details or special instructions the tech needs to know.
  8. Set the schedule:
    • Date -- when the job should happen.
    • Time -- what time to arrive.
    • Duration -- how long you expect the job to take (30 min to full day).
  9. Set the job location. If the customer has an address on file, check "Use customer address" to fill it in automatically. Otherwise, start typing the street address and the autocomplete will help fill in city, state, and ZIP.
  10. Assign technicians (optional). Use the multi-select to pick one or more team members. If you're a one-person shop, Fieldkit auto-assigns you.
  11. Add notes (optional). Anything extra you want to remember about this job.
  12. Click Create Job.

What Happens After You Create a Job

  • The job gets a number automatically (like JOB-0001).
  • If you set a date, the job starts in Scheduled status. If you skip the date, it starts as Pending.
  • If the customer doesn't have an estimate yet, Fieldkit asks if you'd like to create one.
  • The job shows up on your Jobs list and your calendar.

Tips

  • You can create a job directly from a customer's profile page -- it pre-fills the customer for you.
  • If you select a service from your catalog, it saves time by auto-filling the title and service type.
  • Jobs without a date stay in "Pending" status until you schedule them.
  • You can always edit any of these details later from the job detail page.
