Set Up Online Payments with Stripe

Quick version: Connect your Stripe account in Settings under Connected Accounts so your customers can pay invoices online with a credit card or bank transfer.

What Stripe Does

Stripe lets your customers pay invoices online. When you send an invoice through Fieldkit, your customer gets a link where they can pay with a credit card or bank account. The money goes directly to your bank account.

You don't need an existing Stripe account -- Fieldkit walks you through creating one.

Connect Your Stripe Account

  1. Click Settings in the left sidebar.
  2. Scroll down to the Connected Accounts card.
  3. Find Invoice Payments under "Base Features."
  4. Click Set Up Payments.
  5. You'll be taken to Stripe's website to complete setup.

What Happens During Stripe Setup

Stripe will ask you for some information to verify your identity and set up payouts. This is required by law for anyone accepting payments. Here's what to expect:

  • Personal information -- your name, date of birth, and last 4 of your Social Security number
  • Business information -- your business name, address, and type (most contractors choose "Individual" or "Sole proprietor")
  • Bank account -- where you want to receive your payouts (your checking account routing and account number)

This usually takes about 5 minutes. You can save and come back later if you need to.

Finish Incomplete Setup

If you started setup but didn't finish, you'll see a yellow Complete Setup button instead.

  1. Go to Settings and find Invoice Payments.
  2. Click Complete Setup.
  3. Pick up where you left off on Stripe's website.

Check That Payments Work

Once setup is complete, you'll see:

  • A green border around Invoice Payments in your settings
  • The text "Receiving payments directly"
  • A Dashboard button to view your Stripe account
  • A Payment Balance section showing your available and pending funds

To test it out, create an invoice and open the customer payment link in your browser. You can verify the payment page loads correctly.

View Your Balance and Payouts

After connecting Stripe, a Payment Balance section appears in your settings:

  • Available -- money ready to be sent to your bank
  • Pending -- recent payments that are still being processed (usually 2 business days)
  • Recent Payouts -- a list of recent deposits to your bank account

Stripe sends payouts to your bank account daily by default.

Instant Payouts

If you're eligible, you can get your money faster with instant payouts. Instead of waiting 2 days, the money hits your bank account in minutes.

  • Look for the Instant Payout button in your Payment Balance section.
  • Instant payouts cost an extra 1% fee (charged by Stripe, not Fieldkit).

Disconnect Stripe

If you need to disconnect your Stripe account:

  1. Go to Settings and find Invoice Payments.
  2. Click the Disconnect button.
  3. Confirm by clicking Disconnect in the popup.

Any pending balance will still be paid out by Stripe after you disconnect. Your customers won't be able to pay invoices online until you reconnect.

What Does It Cost?

Stripe charges standard payment processing fees. Fieldkit does not add any additional fees on top. Standard Stripe processing fees are:

  • Credit/debit cards: 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction
  • ACH bank transfers: 0.8% per transaction (capped at $5)
  • Instant payouts: +1% fee on top of the payout amount

These fees come out of each payment automatically before it reaches your bank.

Tips

  • You only need to set up Stripe once. It stays connected unless you disconnect it.
  • If Stripe needs additional information from you (like updated ID verification), you'll see an "Update Info" button in your settings.
  • You can access your full Stripe dashboard anytime by clicking the Dashboard button in your settings.
  • Stripe setup is available on all Fieldkit plans (Base and Pro).
